Lake Tarawera Scenic Reserve is 18 kilometres southeast of Rotorua on Tarawera Road. The lake is open to both fly fishing and trolling, with lead core or wire lines, from October 1 to June 30, except for the 'Outlet' which closes on May 31 in order to protect spawning fish. The river upstream from the footbridge, is now a totally closed spawning reserve. The charts were originally hand painted and published in October 2006. Popular fishing spots and bathometric depths are shown across the lake beds. Featured are trout, trout flies, animals and insects that inhabit the lakes and form the unique ecology of these Rotorua fresh water lakes.
